According to an FDA Safety Alert issued Monday, this recall affects Lot Number 84, which consists of Barnsdale Farms, HoundsTooth, and Mac’s Choice Pig Ears in single, six-pack, 12-pack, and 25-pack quantities. The products were distributed throughout the U.S. and Canada.
FDA says salmonella can affect animals eating the pig ears, and that humans could potentially be affected by handling the products, especially if they do not wash their hands after handling them.
Signs and symptoms of salmonella infection in humans include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Consumers exhibiting these signs after handling recalled pig ears should contact their healthcare provider immediately.
Pets with salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
Consumers who purchased any pig ears affected by this recall should discard them immediately or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
To date, no illnesses of any kind have been associated with this recall.
